......franks is what it is, a corner dive bar in a neighborhood that went upscale long ago....despite that it holds its character and ambience....personalities a plenty and if you have the slightest inclination for socializing the patrons are approachable gregarious.....the staff is at times your best friend or if you are rude to them, they can as quickly be rude to you, but that in itself lends to the mystique of this venerable bar that outlasted prohibition, (word to the wise, waving money at a bartender anywhere in the world gets you ignored, but especially at franks)...drinks are cheap, shots start @ $2 and for $15 you can get drunk and leave a decent tip...daily specials range from $5 bucket of ponies to fantastic sunday bloody mary's...has weekly pub quiz on wednesday nights and darts everynight...if visiting phila, franks will give you more stories to tell the kids back home than the liberty bell, just remember to leave the seat up when you leave... - bill , posted 05/02/07 |

im so sad I can't give this place a good review because I used to be such a fan. I used to love this place. I was there tonight, asked if I could get a discount on a t-shirt (because I'm a regular) and the bartender (one of those orangey fake blond chicks with an unnecessary hat) called me "white trash" - which I object to as a term AND object to as a term applied to me. Anyway, I responded with an equally rude name (not so mature but I couldn't resist) and she THREW a glass of beer at me across the bar (got all over my face and burned) then scrambled up onto it and started scuttling along it like a little spider. I grabbed my stuff and tried ot leave, only to be manhandled by the bouncers while creepy orange lady grabbed my hair and yanked. I called later to complain and was laughed at, so I filed a police report. They were fairly horrified but said there wasn't much they could do if I wasn't bleeding. They did recommend I not go back (Damn really? it was so tempting), so I'll resist the temptation and pass the word along instead. So now I'm looking for a dive that's less jerry springer and more my pace. Let me just emphasize that I'm very low key and hard to offend and I've never in my life had a problem with a bartender. SO sad because this was my style place but the people are creepy. Still trying to decide whether to sue. - C , posted 03/25/07 |

Great if your up for a dive, no need to wear anything but a sweaty t-shirt. At least the shady characters are friendly. - Jackie , posted 05/18/05 |

Dirty Franks is by far the best of all dive bars. Low key crowd and nice sized drinks. It's the biggest bang for your drinking buck. - Elle , posted 05/12/05 |

One of the Top 5. Bring Mom if you want to see her appalled. Bring no one if you want to meet some very interesting people. Bring a date if you want to test him. Bring a smart friend for Quizzo. But whomever you bring, don't forget to also bring some sort of disinfectant/sanitizer for the inevitable trip to the questionable bathrooms. Even roach killer might be good to throw in your purse. (Luckily my date was not squeamish about flicking it off the bar as it scurried by.) - Unsubscribed , posted 05/11/05 |

There is no question that Dirty Franks defines the 'dive bar'. There is always a great collection of people from all walks of the urban life mixed together. Local art and dartboard on the wall completes the ambience. - Wilhelm , posted 05/11/05 |

when you just DON'T want to try too hard. Grab a seat, grab a beer, wave your hands (not too rude now) to get the bartender's attention. Just sit back and relax because you really don't have to think too hard here. - Randy , posted 05/02/05 |

You have to be in the mood for Frank's. It's not a place you stop in to use the bathroom. And sometimes the Bartenders can be rude. But there are no pretensions. And the drinks are fairly strong and fairly inexpensive. - Firebunny , posted 04/21/05 |

It's all about what your looking for. But when it's cheap beer, and a no bullshit atmosphere. Dirty Franks is your place. Just looking to catch up with friends or get out of the house or grab some drinks after work...it's the perfect place to pull up to the bar or curl up in a booth. It won't hurt your pocket book and you'll meet some very interesting people. - Mary , posted 03/10/05 |

been going foryears, both when i lived in the city and now every time i'm in town. best thing is its a no bullshit zone -- if you come in and stay after your first drink, you're there to drink, period. - Bob , posted 11/19/04 |

Some people call this windowless place a dump. Some call it the greatest dive in the city of philadelphia. Many of that some are bike messengers. But don't let that put you off. This place kind of rules. - christopher , posted 10/11/04 |

Behind a non-descript grey door on a building with strange grey murals, lies Dirty Franks. A cheap, "let loose all abandon" kind of bar frequented by UOA students, other young people, and some old people too. This is the kind of place that you make best friends with the people sitting next to you. The kind of place you don't DARE sit down on the toilet if you're female. And the kind of place where the people have afterpartys. For a good, loud time, go to Dirty Franks. - Elisabethie , posted 10/08/04 |

Dirty Frank's is a fun simple bar. Laid back people, 2 dart boards, ridiculous "Gopher" pinball machine. The bartender is slow, but the beer is cheap. The music isn't great, but the people are fun! - Unsubscribed , posted 09/06/04 |

Professional drinkers indeed. this bar does NOT bring in the college crowd, just a small eclectic group of people from all walks of life, who want a beer. The jutebox has the best selection in the city. - Unsubscribed , posted 08/12/04 |

I've never actually been, but . . .
I knew a guy in New Orleans who went to college in Philly who used to wax on about this place endlessly. I got the feeling that it was primarily a venue for, um, 'professional drinkers' (if he was any indication). You gotta love the name. - Jeff , posted 07/20/04 |
