Beautiful cinematography
Not only is the story great, the camera work is fantastic as well. The cinematographers (Christopher Doyle and Pin Bing Lee) evoke the loneliness and unhappiness of the main characters beautifully - long shots of small details, held in near silence; quick glimpses of emotions crossing a character's face, felt but not expressed; and everywhere the aura of old Hong Kong: crowded apartments, the humid, torrential rains, the noodle shops, the gambling and dining the main characters distract themselves with. The night scenes (of which there are many - the film is literally dark) are fantastic, with the light just picking out the key details and letting everything else slide into the darkness just out of sight. I hope I get to see it in a theater some day - I saw it on a mediocre home projector and felt that I missed out on some of the subtle detail in these scenes. - Noah , posted 06/06/06

Beautiful flim, lovely story
This is the film that sets up the main character in 2046, also written and directed by Kar Wai Wong. The story is of a man and woman living next door to each other in an apartment complex in Hong Kong in the early 60s. As both of their spouses are frequently absent, they start spending more time with each other, and eventually discover that their spouses are having an affair with each other. They find companionship in each other, but are also resolved not to fall to the same weaknesses as their spouses.

It's very beautiful, very sad, highly recommended! - Jenni , posted 06/05/06
